Class:year10 A-GEL(advanced level)                                                                       

Title: Expressing opinions and teaching vocabulary

Week: 1                                                                               

Session:1
Teacher: Dorothy Chrisohoidis

Time (duration): 45 minutes

Materials /Equipment:Course book, board, pen, paper

Books:  “The New outsiders- CEF” unit 1 “Doing Less Damage” page 6 & “Where does your e-waste go” page 7

Objectives:         

1) Learning to express opinions

2) Reading for gist 

3) Learning new vocabulary by guessing meanings within a context

Prior knowledge: specific vocabulary (related to technology)

PROCEDURE

(Classwork / Pairwork /Groupwork)

Step 1: Teacher asks students questions in the pre-reading task  about "technology and various devices" in order for students to express their opnions or knowlegde  about the specific issue P.6                           (10-12 min)

1. (action plan: extend wait time to about 1-1,5) so everyone can have a chance to express an opinion)

Step 2: Teacher usually assigns a paragraph to each student and they usually read each paragraph aloud in class for general understanding. At the end of each reading the teacher asks the students questions in order to discuss the issues raised and to make sure students have a general understanding. p.7                                                                                                                                        (20 min) 

Step 3: Teacher writes words on board and asks students to explain whichever ones they know by having students come to the board and writing short definitions or synonyms        (10 min)

2. (action plan: accustom students to the idea that they will not understand every word and that they should use the context to understand the meanings. Help can be provided with the use of dictionaries  to find unknown words, but only after they have attempted to find definitions. This will benefit the learners and improve spelling and also reduce teacher talk in class)

Step 4: Teacher makes sure all learners have understood the new words by going over the  definitions and synonyms.  Once this has been done the students write the vocabulary in their notebooks.                                                                               (5 min)

HOMEWORK:

1) Reading comprehension questions page 8

2) Learn new words page 7*
 3) use the following links below and write  a short paragraph about the topics raised in the project done by the previoous students.

Assessment and evaluation

* Students will be examined next lesson (teacher will check homework tasks)

 Teacher will prepare either a work sheet ( matching , filling in) with the new words that students had to learn to see if they studied and learnt words or make them write dictation and then peer correct it. This will enable students to become more active and responsible
